October 3, 2023 — Initial Investigation Report
For the complaint investigation, I met Mr. John Myers, Plant Manager of DRT America, Rincon GA. He had explained earlier as well as during the inspection about what went wrong. There was a man-way gasket(Picture attached) failure on TK804 (Picture attached) which prompted the operators to transfer the material to another storage tank. However, due to the location of the release, until TK804 could be emptied, it continued to release material into the concrete secondary containment area (Picture attached). The facility estimates about 500 gallons of the material to have been released. DRT America is still undergoing investigation; however, they believe that it was the corroded gasket (picture attached) which caused the spills. Also, he mentioned that as the temperature crosses 75 F, the turpentine smells start to spread across larger areas.
