Initial Investigation
24‑Sep‑2003 by michelle cortes
Arrived On Site At 8:30, But The Gate Was Closed. Rode Down The Dirt Rd Further And Found A Gentleman Working On A Truck At The Surface Mine. I Inquired About The Business That Had The Spill, And He Said That They Are Very Rarely At That Facility. I Then Called The Number On The Sign For T'S Trucking, But He Informed Me That He Is Not The Owner Of The Concrete Business, But Gave Me Instructions On How To Get To Their Other Office That Is Usually Manned. It Is Located Off The Hwy 280 Exit. Take A Right Onto The Paved Rd Next To The Service Station, Go Down Appox 2 Blocks And Will See The Sign On Your Right. I Went There And Met With Keith. He Advised That Barry Sanders (912-681-2214) Is The Owner, But He Was Working Out Of The Statesboro Office. Keith Agreed To Go Back To The Facility That Had The Release And Show Me Around. The Facility Is Used Only A Few Hours A Week And Sometimes Between The Last 5 Days The Facility Had Been Broken Into And Vandalized. When The Police Came To Make The Report, They Dispatched The Fire Dept Who In Turned Called For Our Assistance. They Were Unable To Determine How The Clean-Up Should Be Handled For This Product. I Reviewed The Msds On Site. It Has A Ph Of 8.0 And Contains <40% Calcium Chloride. Appox 500 Gallons Was Spilled Onto The Ground Surrounding The Tank. It Soaked Into The Concrete And Soil Next To The Tank And Did Not Runoff Site. No Ww Affected. The Material Is Used As An Additive For Concrete To Help It Set Faster. There Is No Health Hazard Associated With This Material. It Is Not Regualted By Title Iii Section 302, 311/312, Or 313. No Further Epd Ert Actions Required.
